Shady Lakes!

This week Elena had a class field trip to shady lakes. Shady lakes is a little recreation area that has several small lakes (more like ponds) that are stocked with trout. Her class had a full day at this little place. Since Veronica will not have a her day at Shady lakes because they are going to a different school next year, I decided to take her along. The day started at 9:00 in the morning with the anxiousness of both the parents and the kids rising. It was great to see all the parents participating.
I signed in at the school and checked Veronica out of class. She was really excited to go. Then I walked up stairs to Elena's class and she was worried because she forgot her ball cap. She gets that from me, both the worry and forgetfulness. She ended up going back to get it, so things worked out. Off she went to get on this really nice travel bus. Shady lakes is a couple miles out of Albuquerque's city limits and the parents met the bus there.
Once the kids were all instructed by a worker from the rec area it was time to fish. We were only allowed to catch one fish. This wasn't hard to understand being that the ponds are stocked to the gills with trout who bite at everything and anything. So Elena fished first and the bait of choice was salmon eggs. She slowly put three salmon eggs on her hook and tossed the bait into a strategically chosen shady area. Sure enough within a minute her bobber disappeared. Her pole didn't have a real so she simply plucked the fish from the water. She was excited and her screaming blended into the rest of the chaos that surrounded us. Next was Vero's turn. She did the same thing except her fish nibbled and she pulled too soon and the first time it got away. I put one more salmon egg on the hook and she was good to go.
They both caught fish within 15 minutes. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the park and working on a handout. We had a nice lunch and some popsicles. It was good field trip.
